Creating a Project
Projects are created from the Projects index using the Create Project modal. New projects pick up an auto-incremented project number, can copy from a template, and land directly in their workspace ready for work.
Who Can Create Projects
The Create Project button is visible to roles with project edit capabilities:
- Administrator
- Editor
- Representative (when configured for project creation)
Client users do not see the button. They are added to projects by your team via the user management modal.
Opening the Create Project Modal
- Click Projects in the left sidebar
- Click the blue Create Project button in the top-right
- The Create New Project modal opens
Step-by-Step
1. Project Name (required)
Enter the project name. This becomes the title shown in the toolbar and the project list. You can edit it later by clicking the title in the workspace toolbar.
2. Assign Client (required)
Pick the client this project belongs to. The dropdown shows every client in your portal.
The selected client controls:
- Which client users appear in the Project Lead dropdown
- Which client users are eligible to be added as project members
- Whether client users can see the project at all (clients only see their own client's projects — see Permissions)
3. Create From: Scratch or Template
Choose between:
- Start from Scratch — empty project with default lists ("To Do", "Doing", "Done") and no cards
- Use Template — copies an existing Project Template's lists, cards, descriptions, files, and tab configuration
If you pick Use Template, a second dropdown reveals every published template. See Project Templates for how to make and manage templates.
4. Project Lead (required)
Pick one user as the lead. The dropdown is grouped:
- Team Members — every internal team user (admins, editors, technicians, representatives, contractors)
- Client Users — populated dynamically once you pick a client
The project lead becomes the default avatar shown in dashboards and is the first member added to the project.
5. Project Category
Group the project under a category. Two options:
- Choose Existing — pick from your portal's
project-categorytaxonomy - Create New — type a name and ClientCove will create the term on save
Pick No Category to skip categorization. Categories drive the left-sidebar filter on the Projects page.
6. Create
Click the Create Project button. ClientCove:
- Issues the next project number (sequential from your configured starting point)
- Creates the project post
- Assigns the client, project lead, and category
- Copies the template (if you chose one)
- Redirects you to the new project's workspace
A success toast confirms creation.
From Scratch vs From Template
| Start from Scratch | Use Template | |
|---|---|---|
| Lists | Default 3 (To Do / Doing / Done) | Copied from template |
| Cards | None | All template cards copied |
| Descriptions | Empty | Copied (Overview tab + per-card descriptions) |
| Files | None | Template files copied |
| Tab configuration | Default (Board + List enabled) | Copied from template |
| Activity log | Starts fresh | Starts fresh |
Templates are the right choice for any repeating engagement — onboarding workflows, common service deliveries, recurring campaigns.
Project Lead
The lead is one user. To add additional members, open the workspace and use the Manage Project Members button (person+gear icon) in the toolbar — see Managing Projects.
Picking a client user as the lead works, but be aware that client users can only see projects for their own client. If you re-assign the project to a different client later, the original client lead will lose access.
After Creation
You'll land directly in the project workspace with the Board tab active. From here:
- Click + Add a list to add a column
- Click + Add a card inside any list to add a card
- Use the toolbar to set dates, change status, or add team members
- Open the three-dot menu to edit project details, make a template, or view the activity log
See Board & List for everything cards and lists can do.
